Rug Materials
You can buy rugs made out of different materials that have different characteristics.
- Nylon and polypropylene rugs are UV and water resistant and hold their colors well. Nylon is the sturdier of the two and polypropylene fibers can become crushed over time.
- Cotton rugs are a little cheaper in price but can wear out quicker and will show the dirt more than nylon rugs. Cotton rugs can be washed in a washing machine.
- The most durable fiber is wool. It will last a long time and will not flatten. There are natural and synthetic wool rugs.
- Many rugs are made of natural fibers that include cotton, jute, sea grass, silk, sisal and wool.
Weaves
When shopping for a rug, you will come across different types of weaves that are used to make the rug.
- Hand-knotted or pile weave are the best and most durable rug. The more knots per square inch, the better the area rug can be. The knots per inch in a hand-knotted rug vary from 40 knots to 1,200 knots per square inch.
- Hand-tufted rugs are not made with knots and can be hand made or made with a machine. Usually hand-tufted rugs and hand-hooked rugs are made with a modified drill gun.
- Flat-weave rugs are pile-less rugs that are made using an automated loom and are sometimes called a power-loomed rug. Since they are pile-less, they will be thinner than hand-knotted rugs.
- Machine made rugs do have some advantages over hand-made rugs. They can be water and mildew resistant and depending on the fiber are machine washable. Machine made rugs will cost much less than a hand-made area rug. Machine made rugs are usually 3/16” to 1/2” thick.
Rug Thickness and Pads
The thickness of a rug varies by the type of weave and material. Most machine made rugs are between 3/16” and 1/2” thick. Most other rugs will be 1/2” thick, usually 1/4" base and construction and 1/4” rug surface. Separate padding will be needed for rugs that can slip on the hardwood floor which can be dangerous. If a rug will be under furniture, there might not be a need for a pad under the rug. If a rug is just sitting on a hardwood floor, than it can be move easily and slippery and a pad should be used.
